Established IN 1952, Kill Devil Hills is the Outer Banks’ oldest township, though the landmark that lends the town it’s distinctive name has been around much longer.

At one time, the northern Outer Banks were characterized by a series of 100 foot high sand dunes, stretching from the sound to the ocean – from Corolla south to Nags Head.  Kill Devil Hills was one of the larger of the giant monoliths, supposedly deriving it’s name from “Kill Devil”, a brand of rum found washed ashore during the colonial period.

Regardless of the derivation of it’s name, this dune called Kill Devil Hills, has been placed forever in the history books as the site of the Wright Brothers’ first “heavier than air” flight in 1903.  In the 1930’s hearty “dune grasses” were planted on the sand dunes by workers to prevent continual shifting.  They soon after built the famous Wright Brothers Memorial which is visible for miles and into space.

Today, with thousands of rental homes, great restaurants, sports/activities and shopping, Kill Devil Hills is one of the most popular of Outer Banks vacation destinations and for real estate investment.
